Chihuahua Q and A

The information and observations provided below are a general guide. It should NOT replace the advice of a competent veterinarian or more authoritative published works written on this breed.

Q. Are Chihuahuas very expensive?

A.  If the dog is being offered with American Kennel Club official certificate papers, it may cost over $600.00. Some breeders charge up to $1200.00 offering what they call "teacup" sized dogs. These papers (provided by the breeder) mean that the parents of your Chi are registered with the AKC and that the puppy can be registered.

The papers show that the dog is purebred, but they do automatically ensure that dog will meet show standards. If you desire to enter your pet in competitions, it may help to purchase a dog bred from a show champions.

Prices can vary greatly by region and availability. Chihuahuas without papers can be purchased for much less and most are no different from those with papers. If possible, take a look at both parents if purchasing a puppy to determine what size it will be as an adult.

Q. What is the difference between a long-haired and a short-haired Chihuahua?

A.  They differ only in the length of their coat. Personalities are the same in both types. Expect to spend more time on grooming and cleaning up the long hairs, but you'll have a longer and more luxurious coat to stroke!

Long-hairs need frequent brushing, with attention to their bib (the furry part of the chest) to keep it from becoming matted. Another drawback to the longer coats is that occasionally fecal matter may get stuck on their "britches" so watch for this. It is a good idea to bathe the long-hairs more frequently also.

Q. What is the general temperament of Chihuahuas?

A.  Chihuahuas are extremely devoted to their owner, but can be clannish( especially if there are several of them in a household). They are keenly intelligent and make good watch dogs. The Chihuahua likes a great deal of attention, but he/she will give a lot of love and affection in return for your care. Chihuahua owners say that each dog of this breed has their own unique personality. Generally they are alert, energetic and very focused on interacting with their master.
